Valley Sport eNews - 1 March 2026

Hi there! It’s been a busy and inspiring month across our region, with powerful conversations shaping the future of community sport, practical workshops strengthening club capability, and new opportunities helping more people get active and involved. From volunteering and inclusion to safer game days and community grants, we’re proud to support clubs and partners working to build stronger, more welcoming sport - from the Mountains to the Murray.

Big Conversations About the Future of Community Sport
Valley Sport was proud to recently co-host a regional sport volunteering workshop alongside the Australian Sports Commission (ASC), bringing together passionate voices from across our community to help shape the future of volunteering in local sport.
It was inspiring to see strong representation from under-represented groups in sport volunteering. The lived experience, insights and honest conversations shared on the night are helping inform how future strategies and tools are co-designed - ensuring volunteering better reflects and supports the whole community. Workshops like this are about listening first. When diverse voices are at the table, our clubs, committees and communities are stronger, more inclusive and better prepared for what lies ahead. A heartfelt thank you to everyone who contributed so openly - your voice is driving meaningful change across our local sporting landscape. | ![]() |
The conversation didn’t stop there. Captured in the latest episode of From the Mountains to the Murray, Greater Shepparton Mayor Cr Shane Sali joined Australian Sports Commission Program Manager for Industry Projects Nick Abroms and Valley Sport Executive Officer Megan Carr as they unpacked the real barriers preventing underrepresented communities from fully participating in sport. From governance and volunteering pressures to inclusion, accessibility and cultural safety, the episode explores what it truly takes for councils, state bodies and national organisations to work together to build safe, welcoming and sustainable sporting clubs across our region. If you care about the strength, sustainability and inclusivity of grassroots sport, this is a conversation you won’t want to miss. | ![]() L-R: Nick Abroms, Megan Carr, Nate Dedman and Mayor Shane Sali |

Our Valley Sport: From the Mountains to the Murray podcast continues to bring you real conversations with the people shaping community sport across our region. From inclusion and volunteering to leadership and local impact, each episode dives into the challenges and opportunities facing grassroots sport. If you care about stronger, more connected and more inclusive sporting communities, tune in and join the conversation.

If your sporting club holds a liquor licence, it’s important to understand your responsibilities around promoting and supplying alcohol safely.
Clubs must ensure promotions and advertising do not encourage excessive drinking, appeal to minors or promote irresponsible behaviour - including across social media and online platforms. Activating age restrictions on your social accounts is a simple step to reduce underage exposure.
When hosting events involving alcohol - particularly all-inclusive or high-volume drink events - make sure you have clear controls in place, provide adequate food, monitor intoxication and ensure staff are confident to refuse service when required.
For guidance on responsible alcohol advertising and promotions, visit the Alcohol Beverages Advertising Code (ABAC) website for free training, checklists and resources. For licence renewals and regulatory information, log in to the Liquor Portal or visit the Victorian liquor regulation website for full details.

Monthly Wrap-Up: Inclusion & Safety in Action
It’s been another big month across the region, with a strong focus on inclusion, capability and safer community sport.
Inclusive Coaching in Action – Shepparton We were proud to host an Inclusive Coaching Workshop in Shepparton, bringing together 11 passionate coaches and volunteers from six local clubs. With guest speakers Adam Georgelin - former Essendon and Richmond Wheelchair Football athlete and international bodybuilding gold medallist - alongside Valley Sport Project Officer Nate Dedman, the evening focused on one powerful truth: 1 in 5 Australians live with disability. Through lived experience and practical examples, coaches explored how small, realistic adjustments to training sessions (at both junior and open levels) can create environments where every participant feels valued. Attendees walked away with:
Inclusive sport isn’t about changing everything - it’s about making intentional shifts that open the door for more people to belong. | ![]() ![]() |
We were also proud to support the Level 1 Sports Trainer Course delivered in partnership with the Picola & District Football Netball League. Thanks to Dawn from TalkSmart Training for leading an engaging, practical session, and to Waaia Football Netball Club for hosting the day. Sixteen trainers from six league clubs completed their Level 1 accreditation - a fantastic investment in player safety and club capability ahead of the season. To every volunteer who gave up their Sunday to strengthen their skills: thank you. Community sport is stronger - and safer - because of you. | ![]() |
From inclusion to injury management, it’s inspiring to see clubs across our region stepping up to create safer, more welcoming environments for everyone.
Together, we’re building stronger sport - from the Mountains to the Murray.
